Fennel seeds (saunf) have a pleasing smell and flavor and are extensively used in cooking and also in Ayurvedic medicines.

Fennel leaves are added to salads, sauces and soups and finely chopped to garnish sauces and puddings. It is used to flavor pickles and acts as a preservative.

Fennel seeds relax muscles, aid digestion and are particularly helpful in digesting fat. It is good for children's digestion. In fact, it is the main ingredient in gripe water, which is given to children when suffering from diarrhoea and indigestion.
