Website of the Day
http://internetbuttons.org
Generally, grandparents – and even some parents and friends – have a tough time navigating through browsers to get online. They’re not really at fault, since using a computer isn’t the most intuitive experience out there. So they will tend to ask you for help and eventually, you do get a bit annoyed. Internet Buttons lets you fix this problem by enabling you to create customised pages for people with a panel of buttons that grants them easy access to their favourite sites, as well as some other information. Here’s how it works. First, you create a whole panel of Internet Buttons. You don’t have to name the site itself, though. You can specify where the button will lead (let’s say Google), while it will be labelled as ‘Search’ so that it’s easier for your grandparent to understand the function; Gmail can be Email, MumbaiMirror.com can be News, and so on and so forth. All of the login information for the site can be already stored, making sure the process is as simple as possible. The whole point is to simplify the experience for someone who can’t use the Web. More importantly, it’s a cloud-based service. So you can create a simple email address for your grandparent – say, http://internetbuttons.org/GrandmaPatkar – and set it as her homepage so that it’s the first site she opens. And just in case she uses a different computer some day, she can still access it easily. There are also several other useful features available on Internet Buttons, such as a notebook to jot down important things (such as passwords that you want to keep secure), as well as a nice big button that shows your name and number for them to contact you when they get in trouble. Every once in a while, the Internet throws up a new tool or service that seems so simple and necessary, that you can’t imagine why no one else came up with it before. Internet Buttons falls squarely in that category and is one of those services that will make you go, “Where has this been all my life?”
