This
is a very popular herb in the making of confectionery
and candies. It contains starch, sugar, amino acids,
gums and essential oil.
Licorice (Mulatthi) flavors candies, liqueurs,
ice-creams, chewing gums and baked foods. Its constituent
"glycrrhizin" is fifty times sweeter than
sugar. It is commonly chewed with betel leaves after
meals.
This is good for the liver. It cures hormonal imbalances
and peptic ulcers. It protects the spleen and the kidney.
Licorice is recommended for neutralizing toxins produced
by diphtheria, tetanus and intake of cocaine. It decreases
inflammation and relieves arthritic and allergy symptoms.
Licorice reduces throat irritations, lung congestion
and bacteria. It is used for coughs and bronchial problems.
